The Danger of Labels

What is labeling and why is it dangerous in business?
Labeling people impacts how we work or behave with people.
Whether the label is "He's a Jerk" She's such a loser" "They're lazy" and of course my pet hate, the "millennials".
Labels are irrational because people are not the same as what they do.
You and I exist, but fools, losers, jerks or millennials don't exist. They are useless words that can lead to feelings of anger, anxiety, frustration, disappointment and lowers self-esteem.
That's why its dangerous.
If we direct a label at ourselves "I'm such a loser" because of how our brain works it creates an emotional response which gives us feelings of not being good enough, it lowers our self-esteem, impacting how we feel, behave and work.
Its something I train in our online training in the Power Mindset. How we can be our own worst enemy, with how we think and the words we say.
But as a leader of a team the damage of labeling individuals or the whole team can seriously damage the relationship with a person or the whole team, that's why its dangers.
If we label members of the team the brain will notice and response MORE easily with MORE feelings of anger, frustration and disappointment.
If the person has behaviors we don't want or like then we must deal with the behavior.
If as an example "Julie" keeps going to the staff room to sit down, Julie is not a label, so not lazy. Julie's behavior of going to the staff room is the issue and that's what a team leader must deal with.
The moment we put labels on people "Young people these days..." "He's a pain in the backside, he's so difficult and such a jerk at times" we change our behavior towards the person and that's going to slowly destroy any chance of building a professional relationship.
Its like putting the person under a microscope, our brain registers that person is making us FEEL annoyed, frustrated or angered and so we subconsciously LOOK CLOSER FOR MORE!
Those "now look what they've done..." moments and if we keep repeating the behavior we're killing the relationship!
Recruitment is expensive, the current average in lost revenue, advertising, interviewing, training and then getting a team member up to speed and busy is approximately £25,000 per person, if we lose a top performer it can run into hundreds of thousands.
So, please don't label people it seriously damages the relationship we need with teams to be successful. If we see behavior we don't want, that's what we need to deal with, and I'll tell you how in this series of articles and live video's.
